Most panel emergencies give weeks or months of warning first. Knowing which signs matter — and which are harmless — keeps a repair from becoming a fire.
Stop and call today if you notice any of these
- A burning, acrid or hot-plastic smell near the panel
- Scorch marks, melted insulation or visible arcing
- A panel cover, breaker or receptacle that is hot to the touch
- Buzzing, crackling or sizzling coming from the enclosure

Watch for
Signs worth scheduling an inspection
- Breakers that trip under ordinary load, or won't stay reset
- Lights that dim noticeably when the AC or dryer starts
- Rust, water staining or corrosion inside the enclosure
- A panel that is completely full, with tandem breakers stacked in
- A fuse box still serving the whole house
- Two wires landed under one breaker terminal (double-tapping)
- Warm or discolored receptacles anywhere in the home
- A panel installed in a closet, bathroom or over a stairway

Things that worry homeowners but shouldn't
- A faint hum from the meter or service equipment
- A panel that is simply old but dry, clean and correctly loaded
- One breaker that tripped once during a storm
- A GFCI that trips occasionally on an outdoor circuit in wet weather
- Lights that flicker only when a large motor starts, briefly

Panel types that deserve a closer look
Age alone is not a verdict, but some equipment has a documented history worth taking seriously.
Screw-in fuse boxes
Common in pre-1960 Colorado homes. Fuses protect adequately when correctly sized, but they get replaced with oversized fuses, and the panels themselves are usually 60 to 100 amps with no room to grow.
Known-problem breaker brands
Certain mid-century panel and breaker lines have a documented history of failing to trip reliably. If your panel is one of them, insurers and inspectors will flag it, and replacement is the standard remedy.
Split-bus panels
Panels with no single main disconnect were normal into the 1970s. They are not automatically unsafe, but they complicate shutting off the house and often have no capacity left.
Homeowner habits
Simple things that keep a panel healthy
- Keep three feet of clear working space in front of the panel
- Never store paint, solvents or boxes against the enclosure
- Label circuits accurately and keep the directory legible
- Test GFCI and AFCI devices twice a year using their test buttons
- Use extension cords temporarily, never as permanent wiring
- Have the panel inspected before adding AC, a hot tub or an EV charger
What a panel inspection includes
We de-energize where required, remove the cover, and inspect the bus bars, breaker seating, terminations, neutral and ground bars, and the grounding electrode system. We check for heat signatures and moisture intrusion, verify the service size against a load calculation, and photograph everything.

Safety questions we get asked
Is it safe to reset a breaker that tripped?
Resetting once is normal. If the same breaker trips again, stop resetting it and find out why. A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job — something on that circuit is drawing more current than it should, or there is a fault.
Should I open my panel cover to look inside?
No. The main lugs inside a panel stay energized even with the main breaker off. Looking at the outside of the panel, feeling for heat and listening for noise is as far as a homeowner should go.
How often should a panel be inspected?
Every three to five years for a panel in good condition, and sooner if the home is over forty years old, has been remodeled, or if you have noticed any of the warning signs on this page.
Do I need AFCI and GFCI protection?
Current code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoors, and AFCI protection on most living-area circuits. Older panels often have neither. A panel replacement is the natural time to add both.
Is a full panel dangerous?
Not inherently, but it invites unsafe workarounds: double-tapped breakers, tandems where they are not listed, and circuits sharing neutrals they should not. Those are the conditions that cause heat.
What about surge protection?
A whole-home surge protective device installed at the panel protects everything downstream from utility switching surges and nearby strikes. It is inexpensive when installed alongside a panel replacement.
