What charging speed really depends on
Charger brands get most of the attention, but the circuit decides how fast your car actually charges and whether the install is safe to live with. A charger set to draw more than its circuit can carry is the single most common problem we are called out to fix.
Because panels are our trade, we look at the whole picture: what your service can spare today, what you are likely to add in five years, and whether a load management device saves you an upgrade you do not need yet.
- A 40-amp circuit on a 50-amp breaker is the common Level 2 install, adding roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour.
- A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit and hardwiring, not a plug.
- A 100-amp service with AC and electric appliances rarely has room for either without load management or an upgrade.
- Load management devices can make a charger work on a tight service, and we will tell you when that beats an upgrade.
- Detached garages usually want a small subpanel rather than one long branch circuit.

EV charging questions we get most
Do I need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger?
Not always. It depends on your service size and how much of it your household already uses. We run a code-based load calculation before quoting, and plenty of 200-amp homes take a charger with no panel work at all.
Can you install the charger the car dealer gave me?
Yes. We install customer-supplied chargers as often as not. What we are responsible for is the circuit behind it: conductor size, breaker, conduit, GFCI protection and the permit.
Is a permit required for an EV charger circuit?
Yes, in every jurisdiction we work in. We pull it, meet the inspector and close it out. Skipping it is the most common problem we find in other people's installs.
How long does the install take?
Most charger circuits are a half to full day. If the panel needs an upgrade first, that is a separate day of work and we will schedule both together.
